RR: The Immortal Spacemonkey
Random Review
In Random Review I review something at random. Probably most of the reviewees will be fic. If you feel sensitive about whatever I'm randomly reviewing, don't read that review. Some reviews will be good, some will be bad. Tastes vary; you might not agree with me. Feel free to comment, randomly or not.Reviewee: The Immortal Spacemonkey by Shannon K
Fandom: Stargate SG-1 and Highlander crossover
Length: 97,323
Overall rating: 3/5
Author's summary: A SG1 and Highlander crossover. It's been done many times, but here is one more. Daniel is older than anyone could imagine and has somethings in his past that he would rather keep to himself. Read and review please!
My summary: Jack, Sam, and Teal'c learn about Daniel's immortality when they're captured by a culture who are holding an insane Immortal captive and kill him on holy ground. Later, SG-1 is captured by a "Roman" civilization and forced to fight in gladiatorial games. Events combine to make him lose his center and become violent while SG-1 takes a road trip.
Review: There are a number of immortal!Daniel stories out there. I've never specifically sought them out, so I doubt I've read anywhere near all of them, but in general they don't tend to be very well-written. It's kind of disappointing, because I can see that being an interesting plot. This fic, depressingly, is one of the best of the genre that I've read. It had a lot of promise: the author had interesting plot points, and it wasn't too unrealistic. Unfortunately, the quality of the fic was reduced because the author did so much soapboxing, and the plot seemed somewhat forced in places, especially where it coincided with the soapboxing. The fic had neither the depth of emotion nor of plot that I'd like from something of this length. Overall, I give the fic a low 3:enjoyable, but with elements which minorly detract from enjoyment.
